Ama Dablam Expedition – Climb

Asian Trekking logo

There are not many summits in the world that have such a beautiful and recognizable silhouette as Ama Dablam. It is not as high as Mount Everest but it inspires respect and is extremely popular with mountaineers and tourists. Living near the mount Sherpa people and the Tibetans are also fascinated by its beauty and it was them who gave it the name which in translation means “Mother’s jewel”. It is because a glacier seen on the Southwest side looks like “Dablam”- a sacred necklace worn by Sherpa women. The summit is a symbol of an entire Khumbu region and lies in the centre of the Khumbu valley.

Although the mountain is by more or less one-fourth lower than Mount Everest, climbers who succeeded in summiting it are very proud of their achievement. Climbing Ama Dablam needs a lot of effort and technical skills that is why mountaineers should have some previous climbing experience. The way up is difficult and leads through steep ice and rock South-West Ridge. No matter how beautiful it is, it demands strength and endurance.

If you have always dreamt of climbing one of Himalayan mountains but have never had an opportunity to do it, Asian Trekking is there for you and will help you achieve your target. We have been operating since 1982 when our President Mr Ang Tshering Sherpa founded the company. Since then, we have helped a lot of climbers to summit Everest and other peaks in the Himalayas offering various services. We cater to all clients needs no matter how demanding they are. Having been operating for such a long time we specialized in many fields and now our offer is complex. We can provide you with legal, administrative, logistical, guiding and support services. Every expedition is carefully prepared, and we feel responsible for climbers’ safety doing our best to let them ascent and even more difficult descent, safe and sound. It definitely would not be possible without our experienced staff among which there are a lot of Sherpa guides. They come from a local community and have been used to the mountains since their childhood.

Our company has a licence given by the ministry of Culture, Tourism and Aviation, the Government of Nepal and is allowed to operate and provide services in the country. It is worth remembering that it is impossible for any western companies to lead Himalayan expeditions without supervision of Nepalese company. For that reason it is advisable to get a straight contact to us and enrol on any expedition because the price of the service will be considerably lower.

Any Ama Dablam expedition is prepared in details so our clients are provided with everything they need. All the time they are supported by our experienced staff as well as Sherpa porters who carry food and equipment needed. Such expeditions last 30 days and some of them are used for acclimatization. Everything is carefully thought out to make an ascent as seamless as possible on condition that the weather will not spoil our plans. If you are planning to climb Ama Dablam in spring, there are some vacancies in April or May, however, we also organize expeditions from October to November as the weather is really beautiful and the air is clear then and climbers can admire beautiful views not only peaks but also colourful forests and picturesque valleys. Some more reasons for autumn climbing is fewer tourists on treks and stable weather.

How hard for climbing is Ama Dablam?

As it was said before Ama Dablam Expedition is not for anyone without climbing experience as it involves a lot of fitness and strength. Every member of the expedition should have ice and rock climbing skills. During the climb up they encounter steep parts of the route full of rocks and compact ice. Most of the route on the south-west side is fitted with rope for safety and it is considered as free of such a danger as an avalanche, nevertheless, it requires technical climbing skills. What is more, mountaineers have to prepare for the expedition in advance taking up some activities preparing them for lack of oxygen. They should train with weights, walk with a heavy bagpack a few miles 5-6 times a week and generally strengthen their muscles.

Why should you choose this expedition and climb Ama Dablam?

Most climbers decide taking part in Ama Dablam expeditions to fulfil their dreams of summiting one of Himalayan mountains and prove themselves that they are able to achieve the goal no matter how difficult it is. There are though some other reasons like the beauty of the region and its cultural heritage. It is worth taking part in such an expedition regardless the difficulties, as the views on surrounding Ama Dablam snow-capped mountains are stunning. It is true that reaching camps II and III and then the pinnacle is not easy, but trekking to a base camp is a pleasurable experience. Changing colours forests growing on hillsides, encountering farm and wild animals and birds as well as visiting friendly Sherpa-run lodges and tea-houses provide climbers with unforgettable experiences.

Good To
Know

Asian Trekking is a Nepali expedition operating company
established 36 years ago. According to Paragraph 26 of the Tourism Act
(2035), no foreign expedition teams or companies are allowed to
provide expedition services in Nepal directly and any foreign company must
work through a Nepali company
 licensed by the Ministry of
Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Government of Nepal. As such, Nepali
companies are the ones that provide all the legal, administrative, logistical,
guiding and support services in Nepal, while also being legally responsible
for the safe and responsible conduct of the expeditions. Booking
through foreign expedition companies naturally makes the cost to the customer
higher due to the extra layer of administration and profit margins, without
necessarily adding any extra value.
