Everest Base Camp Trek

Asian Trekking logo

The Himalayas attract lots of people every year. Some of them want to get to the pinnacle of Mount Everest to prove themselves they can beat the difficulties that high altitude and the lack of oxygen cause, but there are also many who just want to admire stunning views of lower parts of the mountains surrounding such peaks as Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori and Ama Dablan. When the weather is good all the summits can be admired as well as the nature which shows its rich biodiversity. A lot of tourists are fond of the history and culture of the country which also embraces religion.

Those who do not feel like climbing the highest mountain in the world or are not fit enough usually decide on one of the treks such as Everest Base Camp trek which is not very demanding but also not easy. Such treks are offered by many companies from which Asian Trekking distinguishes considerably. Our company has a lot of experience as it was established in 1982 and since then has organized numerous treks, trips and expeditions. It was established by Ang Tshering Sherpa one of the first graduates of the school that had been founded by the first person to set foot on Mount Everest summit – Edmund Hilary. Having decided to take advantage of education he had been able to get and do something for the local community he comes from Ang Tshering Sherpa founded the company. Nowadays Asian Trekking is known all over the world for providing mountaineers with its outstanding legal, administrative, logistical, guiding and support services. It also takes responsibility for the health of climbers and tourists coming to Nepal.

There are a lot of foreign companies that offer similar services to Everest Base camp trekking, however, none of them is able to work independently but through one of Nepalese companies that is certified by the Government of Nepal. Deciding on heading up right into the mountains with us tourists save a lot of money as they do not have to pay for intermediaries.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp is for many a lifetime experience and is not a very difficult task although the camp is located on the altitude of 5 550 metres over the sea level. The way leads through the most spectacular Himalayan terrains. Tourists are accompanied by Sherpa guides who know the region really well as they live there all their lives. To reach Everest Base Camp means trekking past traditional Sherpa villages and hidden among mountains monasteries called “Gompas”. Locals always welcome guests friendlily and eagerly show them what their daily, timeless lives look like. Those who took part in such a trek will never forget the experience and the most exciting views on the mountains as well as picturesque pine and birch forests. They are beautiful all year round but their exceptional beauty can be admired in autumn when the air is so clear that everything looks very sharp like in a picture.

What to expect at Everest base camp?

We do our best to stick to the schedule of the Everest Base Camp trekking, nevertheless it might happen that it has to be changed. Such situations happen when there is a sudden weather change, bad conditions on trails, a tourist or a member of staff does not feel well, in short, when there is nothing we can do about, but to change the itinerary.

From the very beginning of the trek you will be amazed with absolutely fantastic views of the Himalayas as you will take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla lying at 2810 m. After landing, you will have the opportunity to know the rest of the staff, your Sherpa guides, and you all take a 3-hour pleasant stroll to Phakding where you will spend the first night. If you are lucky, you will be able to admire a few snow-capped summits.

The next days are not as easy as the first one because you will have to ascend first to Namche Bazar at the altitude of 3440 and Kumjung at 3780. In the second place you will stay almost the whole day for acclimatization. During the trek to Everest Base Camp you will be able to see some birds and animals. There will also be a possibility to enter a monastery in Tangboche that is an important Sherpa people place of cult. The views of Month Everest and some villages below the place are outstanding. On the most exciting day for a lot of members you will be trekking through some Sherpa villages where you will stay a little longer for acclimatization. An unforgettable experience is hiking through valleys surrounded by mountains and looking at rhododendron forests, numerous rope bridges and other views you will never see in another place. If you really want to trek to Everest Base Camp you have to be prepared for a whole day walking sometimes on steep icy trails, ridges and rocky paths but the views on the way compensate for your effort. Being interested in details, look at the itinerary where you will find everything you need to know.

We do care for all our clients and prepare everything in detail to make Everest Base Camp Trek as enjoyable as it is possible. Our staff is not only experienced but also friendly and ready to act quickly in difficult situations not to risk anyone’s life. Our Sherpa guides are certified, and they know everything about the Himalayas. Chosen from the local community they are used to harsh conditions and able to help hikers survive.

Everest – is this trip right for you?

In spite of the fact that Everest Base Camp trekking is not an easy task, almost everyone who is used to trekking with some weight on their back can experience it and take up the challenge on condition, that they start preparations for the event long before its start. If you do not suffer from serious illnesses and you are ready to prepare yourself for it, the trek to the Base Camp will be rewarding and may become the best experience in your life. For obvious reasons young people need fewer preparations than the older ones as they rarely suffer from hypertension or heart illnesses, but it does not mean, that 70-year-olds who trained their whole lives and have a lot of stamina will not be able to hike. You have to learn more about the trek and decide for yourself if the adventure suits you.

How to prepare yourself for the trekking and everest base camp?

Being aware that you will have to hike up and down on an uneven trail for 13 days carrying your bagpack of at least 6 kilos on average 5-6 hours a day, you will have to start building up your strength and endurance a few months earlier. Make a plan of your training for 5-6 days a week and at least once a week walk up and down a hill with your bagpack loaded with 6 to 12 kg on. The more hill training the better and your legs and muscles get stronger. It is very important as at the higher altitude there is less oxygen and your lungs cannot provide your muscles with the right amount of it. So if you want to succeed in getting to the Base Camp and not to make trouble for other members of the trek, start exercising, take up weightlifting and walk with your heavy bagpack to be fit. Even experienced climbers prepare themselves for such a challenge in advance.

At the same time, do not ignore the mental preparation, which is an important part of planning the trek to Everest Base Camp. Although the rank of the expedition cannot be compared to climbing Everest, it is still a demanding route with a high degree of difficulty, which lasts several days. Be prepared for basic conditions, rapidly changing weather, and the high probability of altitude sickness.

What should you pack for Everest Base camp trekking?

When trekking Everest Base Camp, proper preparation is essential. It will probably take some time to complete all of the essentials and equipment, so do it as early as you can. Remember that you don’t have to buy all items, which can be very costly. Some of the equipment can be rented, although it must be in good condition.

First of all, you will need a fitted backpack with wide shoulder straps and a length that fits your torso. Since you will be wearing it for several hours a day, it must fit well on your back and distribute the weight properly. As the weather on the route can be unpredictable, make sure you bring a waterproof backpack or a special cover. The trek to Everest Base Camp is uneven in places and the road is steep and bumpy. Trekking poles can be irreplaceable during the trip, helping to maintain balance and providing support in the more difficult stages. When it comes to choosing a sleeping bag, it is partly an individual matter. Remember that the temperature on the trail at night can be below -15 ºC and although additional quilts are usually available in lodges places, it is best to provide a sleeping bag that can withstand even extremely cold nights.

Clothing and footwear are one of the most important elements of your luggage during Everest Base Camp trekking. The weather in the Himalayas is changeable, so it is important to adjust your outfit to all conditions. Experienced travelers know that having three layers of clothing is the best choice: the basic one that wicks away moisture from the body, the middle one that keeps you warm and the outer one that protects against wind and rain. Since you will not have access to a washing machine and you will sweat heavily while trekking, take care of breathable underwear and natural materials (but avoid cotton), preferably made of merino wool, which has hygroscopic properties.

Experience the adventure of a lifetime at the foot of Everest

The Himalayas are a common destination for all who seek to experience spirituality and raw nature. Trekking to Everest Base Camp allows you to have a proper go at it. The rich culture of the Nepalese people and the wide range of landscapes provide amazing experiences. This difficult trip is a noteworthy challenge and will test your endurance in harsh conditions. At the same time, trekking must meet all safety requirements, so it is best to cooperate with a professional organizer of such expeditions. Asian Trekking has been in business for over four decades. Our services have already been used by thousands of satisfied travelers who made their dreams come true by embarking on an expedition to Everest Base Camp.

Good To
Know

Asian Trekking is a Nepali expedition operating company
established 36 years ago. According to Paragraph 26 of the Tourism Act
(2035), no foreign expedition teams or companies are allowed to
provide expedition services in Nepal directly and any foreign company must
work through a Nepali company
 licensed by the Ministry of
Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Government of Nepal. As such, Nepali
companies are the ones that provide all the legal, administrative, logistical,
guiding and support services in Nepal, while also being legally responsible
for the safe and responsible conduct of the expeditions. Booking
through foreign expedition companies naturally makes the cost to the customer
higher due to the extra layer of administration and profit margins, without
necessarily adding any extra value.
