Everest – is this trip right for you?
In spite of the fact that Everest Base Camp trekking is not an easy task, almost everyone who is used to trekking with some weight on their back can experience it and take up the challenge on condition, that they start preparations for the event long before its start. If you do not suffer from serious illnesses and you are ready to prepare yourself for it, the trek to the Base Camp will be rewarding and may become the best experience in your life. For obvious reasons young people need fewer preparations than the older ones as they rarely suffer from hypertension or heart illnesses, but it does not mean, that 70-year-olds who trained their whole lives and have a lot of stamina will not be able to hike. You have to learn more about the trek and decide for yourself if the adventure suits you.
How to prepare yourself for the trekking and everest base camp?
Being aware that you will have to hike up and down on an uneven trail for 13 days carrying your bagpack of at least 6 kilos on average 5-6 hours a day, you will have to start building up your strength and endurance a few months earlier. Make a plan of your training for 5-6 days a week and at least once a week walk up and down a hill with your bagpack loaded with 6 to 12 kg on. The more hill training the better and your legs and muscles get stronger. It is very important as at the higher altitude there is less oxygen and your lungs cannot provide your muscles with the right amount of it. So if you want to succeed in getting to the Base Camp and not to make trouble for other members of the trek, start exercising, take up weightlifting and walk with your heavy bagpack to be fit. Even experienced climbers prepare themselves for such a challenge in advance.
At the same time, do not ignore the mental preparation, which is an important part of planning the trek to Everest Base Camp. Although the rank of the expedition cannot be compared to climbing Everest, it is still a demanding route with a high degree of difficulty, which lasts several days. Be prepared for basic conditions, rapidly changing weather, and the high probability of altitude sickness.
What should you pack for Everest Base camp trekking?
When trekking Everest Base Camp, proper preparation is essential. It will probably take some time to complete all of the essentials and equipment, so do it as early as you can. Remember that you don’t have to buy all items, which can be very costly. Some of the equipment can be rented, although it must be in good condition.
First of all, you will need a fitted backpack with wide shoulder straps and a length that fits your torso. Since you will be wearing it for several hours a day, it must fit well on your back and distribute the weight properly. As the weather on the route can be unpredictable, make sure you bring a waterproof backpack or a special cover. The trek to Everest Base Camp is uneven in places and the road is steep and bumpy. Trekking poles can be irreplaceable during the trip, helping to maintain balance and providing support in the more difficult stages. When it comes to choosing a sleeping bag, it is partly an individual matter. Remember that the temperature on the trail at night can be below -15 ºC and although additional quilts are usually available in lodges places, it is best to provide a sleeping bag that can withstand even extremely cold nights.
Clothing and footwear are one of the most important elements of your luggage during Everest Base Camp trekking. The weather in the Himalayas is changeable, so it is important to adjust your outfit to all conditions. Experienced travelers know that having three layers of clothing is the best choice: the basic one that wicks away moisture from the body, the middle one that keeps you warm and the outer one that protects against wind and rain. Since you will not have access to a washing machine and you will sweat heavily while trekking, take care of breathable underwear and natural materials (but avoid cotton), preferably made of merino wool, which has hygroscopic properties.
